Looking up the plate (missing letter: N), the registered max. tow rating of that specific CLK320 is 1500 kg (3307 lbs), assuming the trailer has brakes.
It must be an odd sight for Americans who need an F250 for towing even the smallest trailer, but I’ve seen even less likely vehicles used for towing trailers.

I’ve read that article when it was new. I’m not in any way arguing one standard is better than the other. Fact of the matter remains that the situation in the picture is only slightly odd and, depending on the content of the trailer, legal and perfectly safe where the picture has been taken. Yet it would be very odd, probably illegal and possibly unsafe in the US.

As I recall Mercedes US tell customers that at least some of their range are not intended for towing at all.
